“Redwoods”

Written by Jason Chin

From The American Library Association 2010 Notable Children’s Books

Briefly, from School Library Journal (grades one to four): “This remarkable picture book delivers a mix of fantasy and fiction through beautifully detailed watercolors. Waiting on a subway platform alone, a boy finds a book about redwood trees and becomes captivated while reading it on the train. As he learns that there are trees alive today that first sprouted during the Roman Empire, readers notice two passengers seated beside him from that period. When he comes out of the station, he finds himself deep in a redwood forest, where, clad in climber’s gear and a harness, he launches a rope, climbs a tree, discovers wildlife in the branches, and experiences the many wonders similar to a professional researcher. The final pages include information about the environmental dangers that the redwoods face, some nature graphics drawn to scale, and an inspiring author’s note. This inventive story will charm and educate readers and send their imaginations soaring.”

District reminds parents that there will be no school for students who don’t have their shots

The Collier County School District reminds parents that Florida law states that children must meet current immunization requirements and have current immunization records before they can be admitted to or attend Florida schools.

Individual schools sent notices home last spring, advising parents of immunizations their children require before the start of school. Of special mention – students entering seventh grade must have documentation of a Tdap booster or a temporary exemption if they received a Td booster in the last five years. Parents of students who received immunizations during the summer should bring their child’s blue Florida Certificate of Immunization card to the school office before school begins on Monday, Aug. 23. Those who still need to receive immunizations should contact their private physicians as soon as possible to ensure that the child will be in compliance with state and local requirements.

The Collier County Health Department provides school-age immunizations free of charge, on a walk-in basis at two of their locations: Naples/Main Clinic — (239) 252-8395, (239) 252-2564 or (239) 252-2684, and Immokalee — (239) 252-7300. Contact the individual sites or check the district’s web site, www.collierschools.com, for more information concerning hours of operation. Students who do not have all of their required immunizations will not be allowed to attend school.

To learn more, please contact your child’s school, District Health Coordinator Eileen Vargo at (239) 377-0514 or via e-mail at Vargoei@collier.k12.fl.us, or the Collier County Health Department at (239) 252-8595.

Village Oaks Elementary celebrates summer literacy success

Recently, Village Oaks Elementary School students celebrated a summer of great reading. For the second year, students were able to visit the school’s library twice a week thanks to a grant from the Immokalee Foundation. When students came to the library they could read, use the computer, and check out books to take home. Some 50 students checked out more than 300 books.

Research says that students need to read at least five books over the summer to retain their reading level. At the Summer Library Celebration, 21 students earned awards for reading from five to 23 books. And, a special medal for frequent attendance was earned by 10 students. Many students also brought little brothers and sisters who were able to listen to books on tape. Congratulations to the students who did such a great job reading over the summer, and many thanks to the Immokalee Foundation for making Summer Library 2010 possible.

Staples to host teacher appreciation day

Staples, the world’s largest office products company and top retail destination for back to school, is making it easy for teachers to have the tools they need to do their job by hosting a Teacher Appreciation Day at store locations across the country. According to the National Education Association’s (NEA) research department, 92 percent of public school teachers spend, on average, $475 on classroom materials for their students.

The first 100 teachers visiting Staples stores on Teacher Appreciation Day, which will be held from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Aug. 14, will receive an Avery Binder filled with paper, a pencil pouch and supplies. Teachers will also have the opportunity to preview new products and services at Staples, such as bulletin board sets, storage pocket charts and Crayola washable dry-erase crayons. Staples is also offering teachers a special copy and print promotion throughout the back-to-school season of 5 cent black and white copies of classroom materials.

Staples Rewards Teacher, redesigned in 2010 and part of Staples Rewards program, is one of many ways Staples helps teachers who spend their own money on school supplies. By enrolling, teachers earn 10 percent back in rewards on teaching and art supplies.

Lee County School District has back to school section on web site

To help families start to prepare to go back to school, Lee County Public Schools has created its annual Back to School section on its web site, www.lee.k12.fl.us. The link – which is a large graphic of crayons at the top of the main page – provides a wealth of information vital for families. From uniform information to bus routes to information on how to register, families can find almost everything they need on this page.

Many schools will be conducting open houses / orientation events over the next couple of weeks – you can check for your school’s event on the district’s web site, on the district wide activities calendar, or families can contact their child’s school directly.

Finally, as the first day approaches, commuters need to be aware that come Monday, Aug. 23, children will be back out waiting for buses on the streets, riding their bikes or walking to and from school – we all need to be a little more cautious and aware as the 2010-11 school year kicks off.

School district seeks applicants for value adjustment board

The Collier County School District is looking for applicants interested in representing the school district as a volunteer on the Collier County Value Adjustment Board. Citizen members are included on the board along with Collier County School Board members and Collier County Commissioners. The board serves the community by hearing appeals from homeowners who feel their property was appraised too high by the county. The school district citizen representative will join a counterpart from the county, one school board member, and two county commissioners.

If you are interested in being considered for a seat on the board, you will find an online application on the home page of the district’s web site, www.collierschools.com. You may also obtain an application or information by calling the school district’s Communications Services Department at (239) 377-0180. The application deadline is 5 p.m. Friday, Sept. 3. An appointment to the Value Adjustment Board will be made by the school board at its Sept. 16 meeting.

According to statute, a citizen member appointed by the school board “must own a business occupying commercial space located within the school district. A citizen member may not be a member or an employee of any taxing authority, and may not be a person who represents property owners in any administrative or judicial review of property taxes.”
