Waiting for Superman: A socialist perspective
The only way to fix schools is to completely overhaul society. Good luck with that. Money quote:
The socialist program for improving education starts with the transformation of the broader society, ending the stranglehold of the financial elite to get the resources needed to abolish poverty, provide decent jobs for all, and greatly expand and improve public services. Waiting for Superman offers the pipedream of improving education while capitalist society plunges ever deeper into depression.
I can agree with some of this in theory. In my younger days it might even have sounded inspirational. Ah, but I am older now, and perhaps marginally wiser. So I recognize how untethered this is from anything approaching reality. And the arguments sound a lot like more strident versions of those put forward by other critics of the film, and current reforms.
The problem is what do we do with millions of kids not getting a good education while we wait for society to develop the collective conscience of a good socialist?
