Ky. schools receive millions for healthy snacks
FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) — A federal fresh fruit and vegetable program aimed at promoting healthy snack options is doling out a total of $2.65 million in 128 Kentucky elementary schools for the 2011-12 school year. Schools chosen to participate will receive the equivalent of $52 per student to operate the program. The Kentucky Department of Education says in a news release that schools chosen must have student populations in which 50 percent or more of the students were eligible for the federal free- and reduced-price lunch program.
Schools in Bell, Fayette, Floyd, Jefferson, Knox and McCreary counties, along with Newport Independent, receive the most funding. ()
