Ashley Vercelli among graduates of Thunderbird Youth Academy

Ashley Vercelli, Ada, graduated from Thunderbird Youth Academy in Pryor June 18.

Janet Barresi, Oklahoma State Superintendent of Public Instruction was scheduled to be keynote speaker at the graduation ceremony at the Hershel Avra Performing Arts Center at Pryor High School.

Cadet Vercelli plans to enter the workforce after graduation.

Cycle 36 began in January with a two-week Pre-Challenge Phase at Camp Gruber. Of the 114 graduating cadets, 19 are female and 95 are male.

Most of the graduating cadets will continue their education – 32 are returning to high school; 31 are enrolling in college, technical training, or Job Corps; and 51 are going into the workforce with full-time employment.

Thunderbird Youth Academy began in 1993 and has graduated more than 3,000 cadets.

Thunderbird Youth Academy is a free program offered by the Oklahoma National Guard. The program gives high school dropouts the chance to reinvent themselves. By utilizing military style discipline, education and leadership training, Thunderbird Youth Academy provides a life changing experience for its cadets. Successful candidates complete a 22-week residential phase during which they can obtain a GED or complete high school credits. Cadets also have the opportunity to attend college courses at the Pryor Campus of OSU Institute of Technology.
